Curriculum
Owls’ Science topic this half term is Properties and Changes in Materials. This week we looked at solubility. The children had to work as scientists to plan and carry out their own tests to investigate the solubility of different materials. Lots of great learning and discussions.
To launch our new History topic, the Owls class started the term with an Ancient Egyptian immersion day. The children first had to ‘excavate’ some artefacts from an archaeological dig, examine them and make predictions about them. In Maths, we investigated how many cubes we’d need to make different sizes of pyramids. We then tried […]
On Wednesday 19th July, the Owls and Swans performed the musical ‘Annie’ to family, friends and staff and children in the school. The children acted and sung beautifully and confidently and wowed the audiences with their various talents, including those who helped with props and music. Of course, this performance would not have happened without […]
This week the children have been exploring the unit Programming Bee Bots in Computing. The children were given three challenges – build a bridge out of bricks for Bee Bot to drive through, make the Bee Bot turn all the way round in a circle without moving off the starting spot and to get Bee […]
On Wednesday 21st June, a group of children represented our school in the netball county final. They played really well demonstrating good team spirit and skill. Thank you to Mrs Wyncoll and Mrs Allum for coaching and accompanying them to the tournaments.
In Science we dissected a heart. The children had been learning about the heart in previous lessons so this really helped embed the learning. Some of them were really brave and used scalpels to cut into the chambers!
The Swans have been learning about ‘The Stolen Generation’. They wrote an explanation text about this; and one child was asked to read her work to the class. The standard of their writing has been exceptional. The children have learnt about the effects of colonisation on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were […]
In the recent after school science club, the children experimented with different material to see which was the most effective to make ‘skittles’. Great fun was had by all.
Last week, the children became Scientists. This half term the focus of their Science is a Scientist Study looking at the Essential Question – Why do scientists need to look after our seas?. The children thought about the question – What is a Marine Biologist? Who is Rachel Carson? The children listened to Miss Jones […]
The children in Kingfishers Class celebrated World Ocean Day on Thursday 8th June. The children found the ocean in the classroom with lots of sea creatures and lots of rubbish. The children found out all about World Ocean Day and discussed how they could protect the ocean. The children were asked to design a poster […]
The Year One children became ‘artists’ and started a new unit of work called Landscapes using different Media – The Seaside. The children thought about the question – Can we identify the key features of a landscape? The children were asked to look at the seaside images from different artists. Miss Jones explained they were […]
The Swans enjoyed their ‘Immersion Day’ learning about aboriginal art. They created dot paintings to decorate the class in preparation for their new Geography topic on Australia.
