History – How did Guy Fawkes feel before, during and after the 5th November?

In History this half term the children have been focusing focusing on the question – How did Guy Fawkes feel before, during and after the 5th November? The children thought about the enquiry question – Can we explore why and how we still celebrate Bonfire Night? Miss Jones showed the children a poem by John Milton, written in 1626 and read it to the class. Miss Jones explained as a result of the failed Gunpowder Plot, King James VI & I made a new law, called The Observance of 5th November Act. This law was made to remind people that they should be thankful for the failure of the plot. Special church services were held yearly on 5th November. English people had to join in the celebrations every year until 1859. The day became known as Gunpowder Treason Day. The children learned about how the celebrations for the 5th November has changed over the years and they talked about how we celebrate it now. The children were asked to create a poster explaining how and why we celebrate Bonfire Night. Great work Kingfishers.
