Prayer and Worship

The children have been learning about Christianity – Prayer and Worship. The children thought about the question – Why do Christians pray to God and worship him? They listened to the story of Jesus teaching his disciples to pray and learned the Lords Prayer, discussing why this prayer is important to Christians. The children learned that Christians use prayer to communicate with God as they believe he listens and answers them. Christians consider God to be someone who cares and loves them, we compared this to the people who we turn to when we need advice, help or need something. The children discovered there are lots of different ways to pray and worship can happen in different places, not always church. Christians may also use different objects in prayer such as a cross, rosary beads, candles, a prayer book or bible. The children discussed when they had said thank you or someone had thanked them and how this made them feel. They thought about being thankful and discussed why Christian’s are thankful to God. Christians believe God provides and so they have a special prayer called a Grace which they say before a meal. The children role played a picnic, learning the following Grace to 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive: The children learned that ‘amen’ means I agree with what has been said in the prayer. They also discussed different types of prayer including thank you, sorry and please prayers, which we will learn more about soon. They explored worship.
Rev. Tracey came to visit. She led us in a demonstration of what would happen in a Christian church service. The children learned about various Christian symbols and why they are important. If the children wished they were able to role play taking Holy Communion. They learned lots of new vocabulary important to Christianity such as congregation, altar, chalice and paten. Great work Kingfishers.
