Science – Can we find out about Charles Macintosh and carry out an experiment inspired by him?

The children in Year One became Scientists. The children continued focusing on – Everyday Materials – The children thought about the enquiry question – Can we find out about Charles Macintosh and carry out an experiment inspired by him? The children found out about the Scientist Charles Macintosh. They found out that in 1832, in his factory of fabric development, Charles Macintosh invented two layers of fabric sandwiched around a layer of rubber and this was developed into the first waterproof jacket. The children worked together to perform an experiment. The children tested three different fabric sandwiches – cotton with ‘solid glue stick’ glue layer, cotton with PVA glue layer and cotton with oil layer. Miss Jones put each fabric sandwich over a plastic pot and secured it with an elastic band. The children poured the same amount of water over each fabric and measured how much went through. The children used a syringe so they performed a fair test. The children came to the conclusion that the cotton with the oil layer was the best! Great work Kingfishers.
