Camp Fire and S’mores

The children enjoyed another ‘Forest Fun’ session with Mrs Clark and Mrs Martin. The children got changed into their outside clothes and headed out to the Forest Fun area.
The children were told that they were going to have a fire today. They talked about the rules for having a fire – don’t walk in the circle, if you see someone in the circle shout red dragon, sit on the logs when the fire is lit and wait your turn. The children gathered sticks and put them in order of thickness and then helped Mrs Martin layer them up on the fire pit. They were introduced to a fire steel and dragon snot (Vaseline on a cotton wool ball) and had a go at using the steel to create sparks to light the cotton ball. They found it hard to use the steels but were able to hold part of the steel whilst Mrs Clark and Mrs marking created the sparks. The fire was lit by Mrs Clark and Mrs Martin. The children then had a go at making their own marshmallow stick by using a peeler to whittle the end of a stick. Whilst the fire got going they were able to access the rest of the wild area and chose to play with the den area, the sand, the mud kitchen and create snail shells using some old cardboard boxes and pens. Once the fire had died down the children roasted their marshmallows, with support from the adults, and made them into s’mores once they had browned. Yummy! The Year One children joined them and were able to roast their own marshmallows and made a s’mores if they wanted one.
At the end of the session all of the children helped put out the fire and said what the liked best about the session.
