Craft and Design: Woven Wonders

The Year One children started a new unit of work called Craft and Design: Woven Wonders. The children thought about the question – Can art be made in different ways? The children were asked to look at some pictures of people doing different activities. They were asked what the similarities and differences were in the pictures. The children sorted the pictures into two groups – art and not art. Miss Jones introduced the children to the word ‘craft’ – to describe making something creative or has a purpose – for example painting a picture of a Lego ship would be art but designing and making the Lego ship would be a craft. The children welcomed a visitor to the classroom this afternoon called Josie. Josie is a member of the village craft group and lives in Stratford St Mary. Josie described her creative and craft interests. She showed them examples of her work and the children asked questions. Josie told the children she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlework – embroidery. The children were very well behaved and were engaged with what Josie was telling them. The children told Josie they loved her work and she was clever and talented. Great listening Kingfishers!
