The children in Kingfishers class thought about the question – Can we apply paper-shaping skills to make an imaginative sculpture? The children were asked to look at the 3D art on the board. They were then asked to pick one element from the model and re-create their chosen section using a technique learnt last lesson, such as rolling, folding or scrunching. They were asked to explain to their partner how they created it. Miss Jones showed the children a picture of the Tree of life (images Tree of life from different cultures). The children looked at the images carefully and answered questions. Miss Jones told the children that the tree of life is a common way of representing all of nature in one tree. Some cultures have stories or myths based on the tree of life. The idea appears in lots of art, from paintings to stained glass to sculpture. Miss Jones shared the image of the Tree of life sculpture in Milan, designed by Marco Balich: Tree of Life’ by Marco Balich. Miss Jones explained that the sculpture is 35 metres high and people can climb up inside it. The children were asked to imagine what a tree of life might look like. The children were told they were going to make a tree of life sculpture in a similar way to the 3D drawings they made in Lesson 2: 3D drawings. The children watched the video – Tree of life to model the process. The children made their own tree of life sculpture. Great art work Kingfishers.
