Battle of Hastings

This half term, Owls’ History topic is the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Invasion. We launched the topic with an immersion day. We looked at the three contenders to the throne in 1066: Harold Godwinson, Harald Hardrada and William, Duke of Normandy. We hot seated the three contenders and made leaflets to promote our preferred candidate. Then we looked at the actual events of the Battle of Stamford Bridge and the Battle of Hastings. We re-enacted the battle in the hall and then re-enacted it again in the classroom using different coloured jelly babies to represent the Saxon, Viking and Norman armies. The children showed lots of enthusiasm for the topic and we had a really good day.
