The children welcomed Sam from the Waste Department at Babergh District Council into their school. In assembly Sam spoke to the children about Halloween and about pumpkins. The children were told 16 million pumpkins will go to waste this year. The children were told how they can use the whole pumpkin to eat – skin, flesh, guts and seeds. She also told the children about the pumpkin decorating competition that Babergh District Council are running to promote food waster. The children joined Sam for a food workshop. She talked about food waste and how we can cut it down. She told them what happens to their rubbish! They also played a game of higher and lower focusing on food waste. The children also discussed tangible things that they could do and they had a ‘pledge’ of ideas to complete in the classroom. The children all received a banana ice cream recipe sheet so they can use their old bananas so they do not waste them. Parents also had the opportunity to drop in and speak to Sam about how they can reduce their food waste at home. Thank you Sam, the children were really engaged and participated well in the sessions.
