Owl’s Trip To Colchester Castle

On Friday 7th February, to tie in with our class work on the Romans, the Owls class took part in a ‘Romans In Colchester’ day at Colchester Castle. We began our day with a Story Tour down in the castle vaults. Our guide, John, explained the early history of Colchester just before, and during, the time of the Romans. The children were very knowledgeable already, particularly about Boudicca’s rebellion.

Later in the day, we had the chance to be archaeologists, examining some excavated Roman and Iron Age artefacts. We worked in teams to build an Iron Age roundhouse and a Roman villa. In between, we walked around the exhibits, following the trail of the Romans in Colchester and completing worksheets as we went.

At the end of the day, we also took a quick look at some of the medieval stuff on the ground floor of the castle. Those who were brave enough went into the prisons!

The children behaved beautifully throughout the day and showed great interest and enthusiasm for everything we saw and did. Well done Owls and many thanks to Mrs Baker, Mrs Suddes and Mrs Double for your help on the day.
