Rocket to the Moon

The Year One children have been exploring the topic rocket to the moon in Computing.  The children were told they were going to learn how to be rocket scientists. They were told they were going to build a rocket using junk modelling materials which they will test out before launching it across the playground and that they are going to learn how using a computer can help them with their designs. The children watched a video of how to make a rocket and were asked to remember some of the materials they might need for building their own rockets. The children were told they needed to create a list of equipment and materials they will need to make their rocket. The children were asked to use Google Docs to create their list. The children designed their rocket using the programme ‘SketchPad’. They were asked to design and draw their rocket, discuss their ideas with a partner and add labels to their designs showing what the parts will be made from. The children watched a video of an astronaut putting on his spacesuit. They children were asked what would happen if the astronaut put his helmet on before his spacesuit? The children found out the importance of doing things in the right order. The children were asked to work out the correct order for the instructions. The children were asked to work out which instruction was missing and were asked to add the extra instruction. The children were told they were going to create their rockets following the instruction sheet. The children began following the instructions. They collecting the equipment they needed and got busy. The children were very pleased with their rockets. The children were ready to test their designs. The children named their rocket and took them outside. The children listened to instructions and followed them. The children stood at the starting line and launched their rockets. Miss Jones measured the length the rockets had travelled and the children recorded the data in their table. The children looked at their data and worked out which launch had travelled the furthest this was recorded in the class excel document. The children entered their data into the spreadsheet and were able to find out who had recorded the furthest distance travelled. Great work Kingfishers.
