Science

Science is taught with the aim that practical learning is not only fun but a key way to develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. In both Key Stages, the areas for learning are Scientific Enquiry, Life Processes and Living Things, Materials and their Properties, and Physical Processes.

We are very fortunate to have ample scope within our grounds for scientific explorations and where possible, children are taught science in a ‘hands on’ way.

We also have a close relationship with East Bergholt High School who periodically arrange joint science days in Key Stage 2.

Crawling Caterpillars

Crawling Caterpillars

Kingfishers received a very special delivery today. It said ‘Fragile Open immediately!’ The children were intrigued to find out what was inside. Mrs Clark opened the box and showed the children the pot. The children recognised them as caterpillars. Mrs Clark told the...

Ducklings Have Arrived

On Tuesday, 20th April, we took delivery of 6 duck eggs.  They were popped into an incubator and throughout the course of the week, 6 ducklings hatched.   The children have been fascinated by these arrivals and have been following their progress.  One has been called...

British Science Week – Zoom

British Science Week – Zoom

To celebrate British Science Week, Owls & Swans took part in a Zoom session run by Dr Mandy Hartley. The children learnt about DNA and how it is useful to both historians and scientists.

Waxing or Waning

Waxing or Waning

In Science, Woodpeckers have been creating models to show how the Moon orbits the Earth, and the Earth orbits the Sun. We also learned how the Moon reflects sunlight - we see the Moon in different shapes depending on how much sunlight is blocked by the Earth! I wonder...

Owls’ Boat Race

Owls’ Boat Race

As part of our Science topic on Forces, the Owls looked at water resistance and how it can be overcome by streamlining. They had to design and then build boats to be as streamlined as possible in order to move the fastest through the water. We timed each boat and the...

Sinking Ships…or Not?

Sinking Ships…or Not?

This week in science, the Swans have been learning about why boats don’t sink. They discovered that the shape of the object affects its ability to float. They looked at an object’s buoyancy  in relation to the Archimedes Principle and had lots of fun trying to design...
