Rainbow Salad

The Reception children were asked if they knew the differences between fruits and vegetables and why it is important to eat fruits and vegetables? Mrs Clark talked about what it means to have a balanced diet and the importance of healthy eating (so that we are able to keep our bodies working and our minds happy and that fruits and vegetables (along with many other foods) contain vitamins that keep our bodies and minds in good working order.). The children played ‘Miss Jones says.’ The children discussed the fact that in order to move their bodies in lots of different ways (like in the game), they need to make sure we eat lots of different types of foods. This is called eating healthily. Mrs Clark told the children they are going to be designing their own rainbow salad containing some delicious fruits and vegetables. Mrs Clark asked the children if anyone could guess why it might be called a ‘rainbow salad’? (The different colours of the ingredients).
The children played the fruit and vegetable feely bag game. The children called out the name of the fruit or vegetable as it was pulled out of the bag. The children were given a paper plate and asked to draw and design their rainbow salad, colouring in and labelling each item on the plate. The children prepared their rainbow salad. The children discussed how they should use use a knife and how they needed to do this safely. The children were shown how to hold the knife and how to cut and chop. The children chose the fruit and vegetables they wanted in their salad and got busy cutting and chopping it for their rainbow salad. The children ate their rainbow salad! Great work Kingfishers.
