Year 2 created our very own magic wands in our woodland area. We decorated a stick using something small, something magical, something given, something special, something pretty and something fragile – all collected from the nature area. It was a spellbinding experience and we all feel a little more connected to the magic of nature!
Across the school this week, our classes have been completing a BioBlitz. Children attempt to identify as many species of plants, trees, insects and animals around the school grounds as possible. Woodpeckers Class turned over logs, peered through magnifying glasses and ventured into thick hedgerows on their search. We found a Portugese millipede, a European […]
Woodpeckers Class had a brilliant day out at Colchester Zoo. Despite the rain, we saw plenty of animals, including amur tigers (up close!), sealions, orangutans and anacondas! We also had an education session all about the rainforest, in which we shared our incredible knowledge and learnt plenty of new facts. As you can see, we […]
The children had a surprise waiting for them after lunch, the first butterfly had emerged from its chrysalis! The children made them some nectar water from sugar and water and gave the butterfly a segment of orange. They were all very excited! By the end of the week all five butterflies had emerged. The children […]
This term, the Owls are studying Earth and Space in Science. In one memorable lesson, we took our learning outside to try to make a scale model of the solar system. We used a football to represent the Sun and selected other spherical objects, ranging from a sprinkle to a small ball to represent the […]
As part of our Science topic on Earth and Space, the Owls were learning about the Moon and why it looks different at different times. The children had to create a simulation to demonstrate how the Moon orbits the Earth and how the relative positions of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon lead to […]
This week the Swans have been engineers. They were involved in a mission from NASA – they were given a budget of 6 million dollars to design a new rover for Mars. First they identified the axles, suspension etc on existing rovers. They then used different types of pasta and polos to create their own. […]
The children have been very interested in their caterpillars and are enjoying watching them grow. The children have been observing them and writing an entry in their caterpillar diary. They have been learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly and learning about the different parts of a butterfly. They also created symmetrical butterflies using paint. […]
This week, the Swans have been learning about The Big Bang Theory. In order to understand this theory of how the universe expanded from one single point (over 13 billion years ago), the children carried out an investigation involving balloons! They recorded data in charts to help them answer scientific questions surrounding this theory. […]
Kingfishers received a very special delivery today. It said ‘Fragile Open immediately!’ The children were intrigued to find out what was inside. Mrs Clark opened the box and showed the children the pot. The children recognised them as caterpillars. Mrs Clark told the children that we will be looking after the caterpillars and watching them […]
On Tuesday, 20th April, we took delivery of 6 duck eggs. They were popped into an incubator and throughout the course of the week, 6 ducklings hatched. The children have been fascinated by these arrivals and have been following their progress. One has been called Queenie as ‘she’ arrived on the queens birthday and another […]
To celebrate British Science Week, Owls & Swans took part in a Zoom session run by Dr Mandy Hartley. The children learnt about DNA and how it is useful to both historians and scientists.
